YAR'ADUA FOR TREATMENT IN GERMANY

                YAR'ADUA FOR TREATMENT IN GERMANY

President Umaru Musa Yar’adua, who returned to the country on February 24, 2010 from Saudi Arabia, is to embark on another trip to Germany for further medical treatment, following an approval of the trip by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan.

The approval, according to a source, became necessary after what the source described as ‘a slight worry’ over the condition of the president’s health.

It was reliably gathered that the First Lady, Hajiya Turai Yar’adua, had earlier requested the government through the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), to allow the president to return to Saudi Arabia to continue with his treatment.

Some close family members of the president are believed to have already been briefed on the relapse of the president’s health.

Our source who revealed that reports of the president’s imminent return to work were untrue, also disclosed that the president is being looked after by two foreign doctors and three nurses in the State House.

Peoples Daily gathered that details of the president’s trip to Germany were being worked out as at yesterday evening. It was also gathered that the president may not be allowed to travel with a full complement of protocol and other officials that usually accompanied him.

But a source close to the official residence of the president denied any planned trip for the president on account of his failing health. The source who pleaded anonymity said that the health condition of Yar’adua was improving and that he is due to return to office soon.

“I can assure you that the health of the president is improving and he is now able to move around, meet and talk with his visitors. There is no truth about the planned trip.

“Just yesterday he was able to see one of the governors and he is looking forward to resuming official duties. It is not true that the president is scheduled for a medical trip to Germany,” the source further affirmed.

When contacted on the issue, Senior Special Assistant to the Acting President on Media, Ima Niboro, said he was not aware of the trip and had not been briefed on it.

“I have not been briefed on the planned trip and I am not aware that the acting president approved a medical trip for President Yar’adua,” he said.

A top official in the Presidency when asked if the acting president had approved Yar’adua’s return to Germany for treatment, simply replied, “I am not aware but I know that Mr. President is entitled to the best medical attention anywhere in the world.”

It would be recalled that Kano state governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau had said on Sunday that since the return of Yar’adua from Saudi Arabia, no state governor had seen him. The inability of the public to sight Yar’adua since he returned from his medical trip from Saudi Arabia 36 days ago had fueled fresh fears over his condition.

Despite public anxiety over the health of the president and the demand by Nigerians for Yar’adua to appear in public, sources close to the president had always maintained that he would soon resume work.

There have been media reports that the president was billed to make a national broadcast before the Easter holidays in preparation for his resumption of office.
